Unusual Pattern Detroit Fordite Necklace
Made from authentic Detroit Fordite, this pendant has a really unusual layered pattern! I took advantage of the color change in the layers while cutting this cabochon, and I think it turned out especially cool! It is a freeform shape with a high polish, and is set in a hand-fabricated sterling silver setting. The pendant is suspended by an 18" cable chain; if you'd like a different length or an extender added, just send me a message and I'll include it at no charge!
What Is Fordite?
Also known as Detroit or Motor City Agate, Fordite is the by-product of automobile manufacturers from the now obsolete practice of hand spray-painting cars on the production line. Multiple layers of differently colored paint overspray would build up on the tracks, and eventually had to be removed when it started obstructing the tracks. Once it was removed, people noticed how aesthetically beautiful it was, and its ability to be cut and polished into sculptures and gemstones. Artists started begging for the material, and Fordite was born! People knowledgeable in classic cars can actually point to certain colors in Fordite and name the car and production year it came from. What a great way to own a piece of history!
