Freeform Half-Moon Detroit Fordite Pendant
This dramatic angled half-moon Fordite has regular curved layers of black, charcoal, and white, really displaying why they call it Detroit agate! The large, freeform shape really lends itself to the drama of the color pattern, and the custom sterling silver bezel perfectly frames the stone.
This pendant is suspended from an 18" sterling silver cable chain. If you'd like a black satin or leather cord instead, or would like a 2" extender added, just send me a message along with your order!
What Is Fordite?
Fordite, also known as Detroit or Motor City Agate, is the by-product of automobile manufacturers from the now obsolete practice of hand spray-painting cars on the production line. Multiple layers of differently colored paint would build up on the tracks, and eventually had to be removed when it started obstructing the tracks. Once it was removed, people noticed how aesthetically beautiful it was, and artists started begging for the material. Thus Fordite was born! People knowledgeable in classic cars can actually point to certain colors in Fordite and name the car and production year it came from. What a great way to own a piece of history!
