Funky Detroit Fordite Tie Tack
Made with authentic Detroit Fordite, this tie tack is sure to get noticed! Funky patterns were created by interesting voids/crevasses in this piece of Fordite, which I polished into a freeform diamond shape to best show off the patterns. The great thing about this tie tack is that it can also be worn as a lapel pin! The pin post is solid sterling silver, with a silver-tone safety back.
I cut and polish all of my Fordite by hand without templates; please expect natural, imperfect shapes. They are truly one-of-a-kind!
What Is Fordite?
Also known as Detroit or Motor City Agate, Fordite is the by-product of automobile manufacturers from the now obsolete practice of hand spray-painting cars on the production line. Multiple layers of differently colored paint overspray would build up on the tracks, and eventually had to be removed when it started obstructing the tracks. Once it was removed, people noticed how aesthetically beautiful it was, along with its ability to be cut and polished into sculptures and gemstones. Artists started begging for the material, and Fordite was born! People knowledgeable in classic cars can actually point to certain colors in Fordite and name the car and production year it came from. What a great way to own a piece of history!
