Funky Reversible Detroit Fordite Pendant
This funky Fordite pendant has fantastic swirled patterns on both sides! Each side is polished, with the exterior edge left natural to show the shape of the original rough material. I hand-fabricated the sterling silver cap to perfectly fit this stone and to allow the shape and colors of each side to be beautifully displayed.
The pendant is suspended from a sturdy 18" sterling silver cable chain. If you'd like a different length or an extender added, just send me a message and I'll add it no charge!
What Is Fordite?
Also known as Detroit or Motor City Agate, Fordite is the by-product of automobile manufacturers from the now obsolete practice of hand spray-painting cars on the production line. Multiple layers of differently colored paint overspray would build up on the tracks, and eventually had to be removed when it started obstructing the tracks. Once it was removed, people noticed how aesthetically beautiful it was, and its ability to be cut and polished into sculptures and gemstones. Artists started begging for the material, and Fordite was born! People knowledgeable in classic cars can actually point to certain colors in Fordite and name the car and production year it came from. Creating gemstones out of car paint is the ultimate in upcycling, and a great way to own a piece of history!
