Large Leland Blue Claw/Fang Pendant
This is an awesome piece of Leland Blue! Not only is it the rare bluish-purple, but it has been cut into a contemporary freeform shape that reminds me of a fang or a claw. I wanted to keep the setting simple since the stone was so dramatic, so I hand-fabricated a simple prong setting to show off the stone and let it shine.
This large pendant comes with a 16" sterling silver bar-link chain that complements it nicely. If you'd like an extender added, just message me and I'll add one no charge!
What Is Leland Blue?
It is a slag glass - a byproduct of the smelting process in the iron industry. Raw ore is heated, and the desired iron ore is separated from various natural impurities. When those impurities cool, the result is stone-like slag. Leland Blue is specifically the mix of blue glass with other chemicals — but this varying chemical medley can also cause the slag to appear purple, gray, or even shades of green. Artisans will collect this material found on the shores near Leland, Michigan and cut and polish it into cabochon stones for use in jewelry. It's upcycling at its prettiest!
